Day to remember for Abel and Gagné

QUEBEC CITY – Olympian Jennifer Abel set a personal best score and Philippe Gagné, a 15-year-old diver from Montreal, won the gold medal on the men’s 10-metre tower on Sunday to conclude the 2013 Summer Senior Nationals diving competition.

The competition is also a selection event for the FINA World Championships July 19 to August 4 in Barcelona and the World University Games in Kazan, Russia July 6-17.

On women’s three-metre, Abel totalled 374.55 as she closed within 20 points of the Canadian record held by Blythe Hartley since 2008. Pamela Ware of Beloeil, Que., was second with an impressive 342.60 and Aimee Harrison of Winnipeg third at 290.65.

‘’I’m pleased with my day,’’ said Abel with her sixth national crown. ‘’I’ve had a really great season so far and I had confidence with all the work I’ve put into it.’’

Abel receive her best score for her forward dive in the second round and also nailed her reverse dive which had been given her trouble all season for four 8.5’s, two 9.0’s and a 9.5.

Gagné earned solid scores on four of his six dives in the final including his two most difficult ones to end the competition for 397.95 points. Fraser McKean of Victoria took a surprise silver at 393.45 and Maxim Bouchard of St-Constant, Que., the event favourite, was third at 391.35.

‘’I’m really surprised,’’ said Gagné, a ninth grader who started diving at age six. ‘’I had a pretty good final. All my dives were stable. This is a list I’ve had for a year now and I feel really comfortable with it.’’

Imbeau-Dulac and Filion crowned national champions

QUEBEC CITY – François Imbeau-Dulac of St-Lazare, Que., set a personal best score and Roseline Filion of Laval reclaimed the 10-metre crown in Saturday’s action at the 2013 Summer Nationals diving competition.

The competition is also a selection event for the FINA World Championships July 19- August 4 in Barcelona and the World University Games in Kazan, Russia July 6-17.

On men’s three-metre, Imbeau-Dulac finished the competition with three incredible dives en route his fifth national senior title with a personal best 485.90 points. It is the third highest score by a Canadian in the event. Riley McCormick of Victoria was second at 462.75 and Cody Yano of Edmonton third at 424.10.

‘’I didn’t make any errors,’’ said Imbeau-Dulac, a 2012 Olympian. ‘’After a disappointing start to the season I showed myself that I can be at my best when it is the most important. I feel I’ve overcome an obstacle in my career. My goal today was to dive with a lot of pride.’’

The highlight for Imbeau-Dulac was nailing his final dive, a forward two and half somersault with three twists in pike position. He receive three 8.0’s, two 8.5’s and two 9.0’s from the judges. Along with the 3.9 degree of difficult that gave him a whopping 97.50 points just for one dive. About a half dozen divers currently execute it on the international scene.

The women’s 10-metre went down to the wire between synchro partners Filion and Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal. Both executed the same twisting dive in the final round and Filion scored higher to take her fourth senior crown with 355.95 points.

“I had struggled individually this season but the last couple of meets it seems to be coming together again,” said Filion, the Olympic bronze medallist on 10-metre synchro with Benfeito last year. “I never lost hope though and it feels really good to get the Canadian title again.”

Benfeito, who won three of the past four summer/winter nationals, was second at 352.95 and Carol-Ann Ware of Beloeil, Que., third at 303.55.

Competition continues through to Sunday at Université Laval.

Filion and Benfeito punch in tickets for worlds

QUEBEC CITY – Olympic bronze medallists Roseline Filion of Laval, Que., and Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal received near perfect marks on their opening two dives en route to the gold in the women’s 10-metre synchro on Friday at the 2013 Summer Senior Nationals diving competition.

Filion and Benfeito also beat the standard for the FINA World Championships July 19 to August 4. The competition is also a qualifying event for the World University Games July 6-17 in Kazan, Russia.

The pair totaled 337.80 points receiving a string of 9.0’s and 9.5’s on their compulsory dives to open the event. Sisters Pamela Ware and Carol-Ann Ware of Beloeil, Que., were second at 304.62.

‘’We corrected a lot of mistakes from our competition in Mexico last week,’’ said Filion, 25, heading to her fifth worlds with her eight-year partner. ‘’The Canadian championships are always a stressful competition for us and we knew we were up against a strong team for the spot.’’

On men’s one-metre, two-time Olympian Riley McCormick of Victoria earned the gold with 365.20 points for his first career springboard crown at the senior level. Maxime Morneau-Ricard of Quebec City was second at 346.50 and Nichols Beaupré of Montreal third at 343.40.

McCormick, a 10-metre tower specialist, underwent surgery on his left thumb in early December. He tore ligaments back in 2005 and had trained and competed through the pain ever since to stay on track for his Olympic goals.

‘’I felt this was a good time to get the surgery done,’’ said McCormick, 21. ‘’This year I’m going to stay off the tower the help the recovery. This season my focus has been the three-metre and I’m going to try my best to make the world team.’’

Competition continues through to Sunday at Université Laval.

May 23, 2013

Abel and Ware soar at 2013 Summer Senior Nationals

QUEBEC CITY – Jennifer Abel of Laval and Pamela Ware of Beloeil, Que., posted a personal best score en route to the gold medal and a berth on the world championship team on women’s thee-metre synchro on Thursday at the 2013 Summer Senior Nationals diving competition.

In addition to being a qualifying event for the FINA World Championships July 19 to August 4 in Barcelona, spots will also be determined for the World University Games July 6-17 in Kazan, Russia.

Abel and Ware, a new partnership this season, totalled 324.27 to easily beat the world team qualifying standard. Emma Friesen of North Vancouver and Hailey Casper of Calgary were second at 273.03.

“It went extremely well,” said Abel, an Olympic bronze medallist in the event last year with Emilie Heymans. “We executed our dives really well. We were a bit penalized on the third dive but it’s not something that worries us.”

This is the sixth competition this year for Abel and Ware. They won the Winter Nationals title in February, earned two medals in three appearances on the FINA World Series circuit and added silver three weeks ago at the Canada Cup Grand Prix in Gatineau.

“We improved all facets of our diving,” said Ware, 20. “The level of our first two dives in particular was much higher.”

On women’s one-metre, which is an event at the world championships, Friesen took top spot with 271.90. Eloise Bélanger of Montreal was second at 259.95 and Jo-Annie Dubois of Quebec City third at 236.95.

‘’It was a really good warm-up for the three-metre,’’ said Friesen, a silver medallist at the USA Grand Prix on three-metre two weeks ago. ‘’There was pressure as the defending champion and I performed well while feeling nervous. I have to accept that it’s part of the excitement.’’

Competition continues through to Sunday at Université Laval.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Emma Friesen of North Vancouver and Philippe Gagné of Montreal each won their first international medal on Saturday at the fifth stop on the FINA Grand Prix diving circuit.

On women’s three-metre, Qu Lin of China took the gold medal with 326.30 points. Friesen followed closely at 322.05 and Inge Jansen of the Netherlands was third at 301.60. Aimee Harrison of Winnipeg was also in the final and was fifth at 269.20.

“It was incredible and it made all the hard work well worth it,” said Friesen, 24. “The reverse dive was definitely a highlight, I really nailed it. I knew going into the last dive how well I was doing and while I could have done the take-off better I was pleased with my finish.”

Harrison, 18, was also in her first Grand Prix final.

“I was hoping to fare better today,” she said. “Still at this competition I think a set a new level of excellence for myself.”

China was 1-2 in the men’s 10-metre final with Huo Liang earning the gold at 571.25 and Jian Yang the silver at 515.95. Gagné, 15 and competing at only his second career Grand Prix, followed with a personal best 431.20.

‘’It’s a great feeling to get a medal,’’ said Gagné, who made his international debut two weeks ago at the Canada Cup Grand Prix in Gatineau. ‘’After the semis, I knew a medal was possible but I was going to have to get a personal best score to have any chance.’’

Competition ends Sunday featuring Cody Yano of Edmonton in the men’s three-metre final.
